Direct Billing Agreements: A Simpler Way to Process Insurance Claims

What is a Direct Billing Agreement (DBA)?

A DBA is a special arrangement between your yacht's insurance company and MedAire.

Under this agreement and with the approval of all parties involved, MedAire can directly bill your insurer for covered medical expenses within cases that require shoreside attention. This can greatly save you time and effort.

How would a DBA benefit you?

Having a DBA in place offers numerous benefits, both for MedAire, you the client and your insurer, including:

  • Operational clarity: Allowing us to medically manage the case from start to finish and directly focus upon achieving the best possible patient outcome.
  • Cost efficiency: By engaging MedAire early and allowing us to manage the case from the onset of symptoms, we can potentially help avoid escalation (75% of our cases are resolved onboard).
  • Streamlined medical arrangements: MedAire can manage medical arrangements on your behalf without requiring financial approval, leading to potentially faster access to quality care and less administrative burden for you. This allows you to focus upon managing the wellbeing of your crew.

How does a DBA work?

The flow chart highlights a typical case flow, comparing a scenario with and without a DBA in place. This highlights the benefits discussed above and illustrates the streamlined nature of a DBA.

How to Set Up a DBA

MedAire may be able to set up a DBA with your insurer.

The following steps below offer a guideline about the process:

  1. Request: Send a request to MedAire and your insurer to establish a DBA.
  2. Approval: The insurer may issue an amendment to the insurance policy to reflect the DBA.
  3. Coordination: MedAire may coordinate a meeting with all parties to discuss and agree upon procedures.
  4. Implementation: MedAire drafts and implements an operational procedure approved by each party.
