Direct Billing Agreements: A Simpler Way to Process Insurance Claims

Written by Admin | Jun 3, 2025 2:22:56 PM

What is a Direct Billing Agreement (DBA)?

A DBA is a special arrangement between your yacht’s insurance company and MedAire.

With approval from all parties, MedAire can directly bill your insurer for covered medical expenses in cases requiring shoreside attention. This can save significant time and effort.

How would a DBA benefit you?

A DBA offers benefits for you, your insurer, and MedAire, including:

  • Operational clarity: Enables full medical case management focused on the best possible patient outcome.
  • Cost efficiency: Early engagement helps prevent escalation (75% of our cases are resolved onboard).
  • Streamlined medical arrangements: MedAire can manage care on your behalf without separate financial approvals, enabling faster access to quality care and less administrative burden for you.

How does a DBA work?

The flow chart below compares a typical case with and without a DBA, illustrating the benefits and streamlined process.

How to set up a DBA

MedAire may be able to establish a DBA with your insurer. The typical process is:

  1. Request: Send a request to MedAire and your insurer to establish a DBA.
  2. Approval: The insurer may issue a policy amendment to reflect the DBA.
  3. Coordination: MedAire coordinates a meeting with all parties to agree procedures.
  4. Implementation: MedAire drafts and implements an operational procedure approved by each party.
