Gulfstream Exec Revolutionizes Aviation Safety
TEMPE, Ariz., September
17, 2007 – In 1989, Robert “Coop” Cooper, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Gulfstream, made an innovative decision to enhance the health and safety of aircraft owners and operators. Little did he know that his decision to put an automatic external defibrillator (AED) onboard every Gulfstream jet would affect the future of business and commercial aviation.
On Sept. 14, 2007, in honor of the late Robert Cooper (1926 - 2007), MedAire’s founder and chairman of the Board, Joan Sullivan Garrett, will donate an AED and plaque to Gulfstream’s new Customer Service Center in Savannah, Ga. Cooper held various high-level positions at Gulfstream from 1978-1996.
“Through Bob’s innovation and insight, he recognized the importance of providing for the well-being of their owners and operators on the aircraft,” said Garrett.
In 1989, Bob’s foresight helped pave the way for all Gulfstream aircraft to procure a MedAire health and safety package including medical crewmember training, medical kits, an AED and a subscription to MedAire’s 24/7 MedLink Global Response Center. Through MedLink, a pilot or flight attendant can speak directly with a U.S. board-certified physician and receive remote medical guidance on how to manage the ill and injured whether in the air or away from
home.
In 1997, Cooper’s decision provided Garrett with the ammunition to testify before the U.S. Congress on the benefits of placing AEDs and advanced medical kits onboard aircraft. Her testimony later made an impact in Washington DC and in 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration amended the commercial aircraft operating rules to require aircraft of more than 7,500 pounds to carry approved AEDs and emergency medical kits for airplanes in which a flight attendant is required. Both rulings became effective April 12, 2004.
“As a result of getting AEDs into corporate aviation, there was a real pressure for commercial airlines to do the same,” Garrett said. “Because of Bob Cooper, the overall health and safety of business and commercial aviation has improved tenfold.”
