MedAire Provides a Wide Range of Medical
Support to Victims of Tidal Wave Disaster

TEMPE, Ariz. (Jan. 5, 2005) Health and security assistance provider MedAire, Inc. continues providing assistance to victims of the earthquake and resulting tsunamis that hit coastal regions of Asia on December 27, 2004.

Assistance – ranging from medical advice and situational updates to locating missing persons; repatriation of mortal remains; and medical evacuations – has been provided by medical professionals inside the company’s Asia and U.S.-based global response centers and MedAire’s Global Doctor medical clinics – in particular Global Doctor Bangkok.

Within the first 24-hours of the disaster, MedAire deployed a medical team to Phuket, Thailand.  The team immediately set-out assisting local medical facilities, facilitating information to and from the region and working local evacuation logistics. “It is nothing short of a holocaust,” said Global Doctor physician Dr. Cesar Vargas while on the ground in Phuket.

Evacuations coordinated from the U.S. and MedAire’s Beijing evacuation center, transported victims to a wide variety of destinations from Australia to the United States with most transports taking injured people to Bangkok.  Medical personnel at MedAire’s Global Doctor Bangkok clinic worked around the clock at the clinic and at local hotels administering to injured who made their way back to the city on their own.  Dr. Vargas indicated that the greatest concern for many of the injuries centered around infections rather than the injuries themselves.

“We organized all available resources to assist those affected by this tragedy,” said Joan Sullivan Garrett, MedAire chairman and CEO.  “We managed everything from complex evacuations and telemedicine support to simply lending a little peace of mind.  For example, one touching call came from a young woman who couldn’t reach her mother in Japan to let her mother know that she was okay.  We were able to relay the message to a very anxious mother in her native language.”

As commercial aircraft began to be utilized to airlift large groups of injured people out of areas such as Sri Lanka, MedAire was called upon to provide medical supplies for those aircraft. In addition to fulfilling those requirements, MedAire’s MedLink Global Response Center and physicians monitored respective flights to provide support for any medical complications that might occur while in flight.

MedAire continues in its efforts to support the regions by coordinating the collection, delivery and distribution of badly needed medical supplies and spearheading company fund raising.
