June 19, 2008 – WHO Avian Influenza – Indonesia Update
The World Health Organization reported today the Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection. The cases are not linked epidemiologically. The first is a 16-year-old female from South Jakarta, DKI Jakarta Province developed symptoms on May 7, was hospitalized on May 12 and died on May 14. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate exposure to sick and dead poultry.
The second case is a 34-year-old female from Tangerang District, Banten Province who developed symptoms on May 26, was hospitalized on June 2 and died on June 3. Investigations into the source of her infection are ongoing.

 

Since January 2004, when human cases of H5N1 avian influenza were first reported in the current outbreak, 385 cases and 243 deaths have been reported in total.  Indonesia, with 135 cases and 110 deaths has been the most severely affected country, followed by Viet Nam with 106 cases and 52 deaths, Egypt with 50 cases and 22 deaths, Thailand with 25 cases and 17 deaths, China with 30 cases and 20 deaths, Turkey with 12 cases and 4 deaths, Azerbaijan with 8 cases and 5 deaths, Cambodia with 7 cases and 7 deaths, Iraq with 3 cases and 2 deaths , Laos with 2 cases and 2 deaths, Djibouti with 1 case and no deaths, Myanmar with 1 case and no deaths, Pakistan with 3 cases and 1 death, Nigeria with 1 case and 1 death and Bangladesh with 1 case and no deaths.
