September 10, 2008 – WHO Avian Influenza – Indonesia Update
The World Health Organization reported today the Ministry of Health of Indonesia has retrospectively announced two confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The first case, a 38 year old male from Tangerang Municipality, Banten Province developed symptoms on July 4, 2008, was hospitalized on July 9 and died on July 10. There were free roaming poultry throughout his neighborhood, including a commercial poultry pen owned by a neighbor.
The second case, a 20 year old male from Tangerang District, Banten Province developed symptoms on July 20, was hospitalized on July 29, and died on July 31. Reports indicate that chickens from the case's household had died in the week preceding the onset of his symptoms and that he had slaughtered and consumed some of his stock during this period.
Since January 2004, when human cases of H5N1 avian influenza were first reported in the current outbreak, 387 cases and 245 deaths have been reported in total. Indonesia, with 137 cases and 112 deaths has been the most severely affected country, followed by Viet Nam with 106 cases and 52 deaths, Egypt with 50 cases and 22 deaths, Thailand with 25 cases and 17 deaths, China with 30 cases and 20 deaths, Turkey with 12 cases and 4 deaths, Azerbaijan with 8 cases and 5 deaths, Cambodia with 7 cases and 7 deaths, Iraq with 3 cases and 2 deaths , Laos with 2 cases and 2 deaths, Djibouti with 1 case and no deaths, Myanmar with 1 case and no deaths, Pakistan with 3 cases and 1 death, Nigeria with 1 case and 1 death and Bangladesh with 1 case and no deaths.
