Dr. Alves, a cardiologist who long has worked in aviation, will discuss the risk factors for heart disease, as well as today’s preventive approaches against developing this No. 1 cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Cardiovascular disease—especially as pilots age—is one of the most common causes for a pilot’s medical disqualification in the United States and worldwide,” explains Dr. Alves. “And while there is no single cause for heart attacks, a series of risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing cardiac problems.”
In synchronization with heart health, MedAire’s medical instructors and doctors will administer free blood cholesterol screenings and provide results to NBAA attendees within five minutes at Booth #775. Dr. Alves will take the cholesterol results from 2008 and from the first day of 2009 and present them during his session, giving attendees a sampling of heart health on the NBAA showroom floor.
Dr. Alves’ Safety and Risk Management presentation will address:
- Underlying mechanisms of the development of heart disease
- Risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including the prevalence of high cholesterol
- Ways to prevent cardiovascular disease in pilots
- Results from NBAA attendees’ cholesterol levels
