Prevention of Dengue Fever
There is no vaccine available for the prevention of dengue fever (although research and development is underway).  The use of strict insect precautions is the only way to reduce the risk of infection.
The following is an integrated approach to the use of insect precautions:

  • Apply DEET product on the skin.  Consider a “controlled release” product.
  • Cover anklets/wrist bands with DEET.
  • Spray clothing with Permethrin.
  • Wear long sleeves, long pants, and loose fitting clothing.
  • Lodging should have screened windows & doors or air-conditioned rooms.
  • Avoid dark clothes.
  • Avoid perfumes, colognes, etc.
  • Spray accommodations with appropriate pyrethroid insecticide.
    DEET
  • Available in many commercial preparations, including Cutter & OFF.
  • Read and follow instructions as far as the length of time it is effective.
    Permethrin
  • Used to cover clothing, mosquito nets, curtains, etc.
  • Effective against mosquitoes, ticks, mites, chiggers, tsetse flies, bed bugs, fleas, sand flies.
  • Poorly absorbed through the skin, rapidly metabolized.
  • Odorless, non-staining, non-oily
