MedAire Crew Support: Managing the healthcare needs of crews worldwide

Crew members on duty travel are prone to the same types of accidents they might encounter at home — Broken bones. Migraines. Cracked teeth. Burns. Food poisoning. Insect bites. Flu. Allergic reactions.

In layover situations, however, airline employees don’t have access to family physicians, may be uncomfortable seeking care at unfamiliar medical facilities or may not have access to immediate medical care.

By seeking help at the onset of a medical situation, crew members minimize the possibility of future or escalated emergencies.

MedAire’s Crew Support program takes the worry and guesswork out of addressing such medical emergencies, providing immediate, around-the-clock assistance. With one phone call to MedAire’s Global Response Center (GRC), the employee has immediate access to medical services – prescription refills, local physician referrals, on-site physician visits and emergency transportation, as well as coordination in the local language – all conducted through MedAire’s GRC.

Crew Support provides a comprehensive solution that meets the medical needs of crew members and airline employees on duty travel:

Physician Referrals
When a medical need cannot be resolved through a telephone consultation with a Nurse Case Manager, a GRC communication specialist can access more than 10,000 credentialed, preferred medical providers within the company’s proprietary database of hospitals, general practitioners, dentists and specialists.

Emergency Medical Transportation
When medically necessary, GRC staff coordinate and mobilize local emergency response services, utilizing the company’s proprietary database of emergency responders.

24/7 Access to Emergency Care Doctors
Physicians working within the emergency room of Good Samaritan Regional Hospital (part of the Banner Health Care System) are available around-the-clock, answering remote emergency calls.

Procurement and Delivery of Medications
GRC responders are experienced in managing remote medical situations around the world, including recommending appropriate medications and arranging for their delivery.

Crewmember Monitoring
In the event of a hospitalization, GRC staff remain in regular contact with the crewmember, the medical facility staff and, as needed, with the treating physician, ensuring continuous quality care. The airline will receive comprehensive and regular reports on the employee’s progress until he/she can be returned safely home.

Evacuation Coordination
If a physician believes an employee’s medical needs would be better met in another city/country, a medical evacuation will be coordinated.

Benefits to the Airline
Savings – MedAire has developed extensive remote medical management experience and diagnostic skills, enabling its team to resolve many situations over the telephone – without involving costly outside resources that the airline might otherwise absorb.

Crewmember Assurance – Crew Support, with its proactive approach to treating illness, provides crew and family with peace of mind during duty travel.

Enhanced airline-employee relationship – Airlines that use this service make a bold statement about the importance they place on their employees’ health and well-being. Studies indicate that healthy employees are a company’s best asset.
